Passat headlamp polishing

a_taped_ready.JPG

The Passat's lighting was getting dim and the plastic headlamp covers were badly pitted. I decided to try out a polishing kit to clear up the lenses. If it didn't work then I would think about replacements. Glad I tried out the polishing kit because it worked quite well!

Passat HID install

2_outside_low_fog.jpg

Two ways to install a HID kit in a Passat. The light output is amazing and this is a VERY worthwhile upgrade I recommend. Some basic mechanical and electrical aptitude helps.

Jetta Halogen90003 to HID Bi-Xenon

Bi-Xenon9003_001-a.jpg

Stock North America Mk.III headlights SUCK! So I upgraded to European units that use a halogen 9003 bulb. The output was better but when it came to rainy nights I was still straining to see the road. When I installed HIDs in the Passat and saw the incredible difference they made, well, I decided my Jetta needed HIDs as well. Installation was easier than the Passat so this is just a quick helper for when it comes to modifying the Euro light housings. The install itself is relatively simple.

Goldwing turn signal lube

GW_turnsignal_switch_005.jpg

My turn signal switch had troubles staying in the right signal position so I took the assembly apart to figure out what was going on. Turns out the 1981 grease was very thick after aging all these years! So I cleaned it out and re-lubed it. Now it works much better. These are pictures to help with the switch fix and don't give a step-by-step but it's simple enough for a beginner to perform.

Routan LED eyebrows

036.JPG

Basic guide to installing LED eye-brows to the VW Routan. With the angle of the headlight tops and the smaller LED size these are best described as "accent lighting". I just can't bring myself to call them DRL (Daytime Running Lights) without wincing. Where I mention "DRL" it's meant to mean the white, always-on, running/accent lights.

Jetta side mirror replacement

IMAG0893.jpg

Installation of the side-view mirror for the Mk.III. I use a wide-angle mirror for better driver awareness. If your car has heated mirrors like mine this will work.

Apache lift box repair

IMAG1648.jpg

Cleaning, lubing, and gear pin repair for our 1976 Apache Royal gear [lift] box. This is the early style gear box and I take ours apart, clean it, lubricate, and weld in a pin to fix the broken one. This is the pin that holds the center ring gear stationary.

Motorcycle tire vise upgrade

20170616_201351.jpg

The tire vise that comes with the Harbor Freight lift is pathetic so I upgraded to the Derek Weaver vise. While it does comes with fasteners it doesn't come with instructions. Mounting will require drilling into the metal flooring. This set up fits both my bikes which have about a 5" (inch) front tire width. Full capacity range is 3/4" to 6-3/4". If wider tires are used the fixed clamp can be moved over (and new mounting holes drilled) to accommodate.

Motorcycle tire vise upgrade331 viewsHere is my Sport Classic in the new Derek Weaver vise.

I kept the original wheel stop because it is in a stronger mounting location. Using the supplied DW wheel stop would require mounting it on the vertical strip just under the lift bed. That is welded on and could possibly bend if struck too hard when rolling the bike against it. It would also require drilling two more holes...meh, why bother?

Jetta Halogen90003 to HID Bi-Xenon407 viewsThe far left box shows plastic removed for the HID wires and the 3-prong plug that normally goes on the halogen bulb. Make the left [driver] side slightly bigger to accommodate all wires. Should be snug! Center box shows how bulb retaining hook is moved to under the frame and the far right box shows how the retaining wire is positioned to hold the HID bulb in. It will require a slight bending of the wire but not too much because you don't want to break the spring steel!! Dec 05, 2010
